Member's Poll #2 (by *pergamjee, after a conversation with ~mitayashi on these topics) : Which aspect of SaiMono interest you the most? Would your answers be different for the anime, the manga, and the light novels? Comments and examples, please.
It was difficult, but I those the relationships! Honestly, I went into Saiunkoku not expecting much of anything - it was just a suggested anime on my youtube bar. I was interested in the world, though, and I was also pleasantly surprised for the bishies! XD When the political stuff was introduced, though, I got really intrigued - but ultimately, I think I really got hooked on the relationship aspect. I really wanted to see how it would all resolve itself, and with the political undertones, I think that amplified it - after all, with the politics at play (and Shuurei's dreams!), what would happen?
However, it's also important to mention that another big factor was probably Shuurei's character. It's difficult to find interesting female anime leads. Shuurei is determined, and while she may need help at times, she is able to support her own weight, and she doesn't fall into a lot of the anime tropes for female leads (let alone female characters in general - ie: extreme hothead, reverse abuse, etc). If Saiunkoku didn't have Shuurei as the main character, I think it would have been a pretty different story (for better or for worse).
I voted for the Costumes and Hairstyles.. I found historical anime the best because they are fully of ancient costumes the men are BISHOUNEN.. with long hair....mmm... and the love story aren't simply like a shoujo so aren't superficial

Complex characters are key to an interesting plot. If your characters are the same through out and everything about them is known right at the beginning, then it doesn't make the story fun and the story itself can't develop.
For me...in things like anime/manga/games, it varies on what I like. In this case what drew me most to SaiMono was the period. I've always enjoyed period pieces most likely because I myself feel out of place in my own time. So it is nice to see other periods.
what I love most from saiunkoku anime is of course the female main chara Shuurei, she is the best, I love her so much.. but beside that, what I love the most is its originality from the story, the character, the animation, and the story flow.. I know that there are many historical anime with good character like saiunkoku, however saiunkoku has its originality (I think its lay on shuurei for most of time) that make this anime different and better than other typical anime history.. also the character on this anime is all fit perfectly, they are honest and awesome.. love this anime soooo much
defiantly Strong Female Characters, and there arnt many of them in other manga/anime but i wish they were. i chose this cuse no mater what the challenge was they phased it head on with the support of there friend and family
Let's see, I became intrigued with the Period/Ancient Costumes and Hairstyles of SaiMono. The artwork is amazing! But, I also got to love the relationships. Yup! I haven't finished watching it yet, but the politics and governance is also very interesting!
Bishies all the way~ Then relationships! No matter whether I am talking about the manga or anime, those two characteristics are my fav Although I have to admit that the political and supernatual aspects of the anime were what kept me hooked through the second season. But for the manga... Bishies!!!! Seiran!!!!
I chose the complex characters, but theres so much more that I like about Saimono like politics, the costumes and yes, the delicious bishies . One of the things that appealed to me was the strong independent female lead, especially in a harem themed anime. Often in this genre, the female is just a ditzy airhead who can't do anything for herself, whereas in Saimono Shuurei isn't so easliy charmed by attractive males or the perspective of living a rich and comfortable life. If Shuurei where like to be those cliched female leads other reverse harem stories she probably would have just married Ryuuki from the start and that would have been totally disappointing
Puh. I don't know what to choose! The bishies and the ancient costumes drew me in. The theme of politics set it apart from the other that are all about romance/personal drama. I'm normally not much of a fan of political drama, but I do hate the annoying shoujo teenage drama. Most of all I love some of the characters and their relationships.
I chose the characters because I couldn't choose several. :/
Hehe, I would have to check all options! I love lovely bishies but it's not enough to pick my interest since a lot of yaoi has bishies but the plot is cliché or trash. Saiunkoku Monogatari has everything that is according to my preferences: complex characters and their relationships, lovely bishies, China or Japan setting, great historical costumes (I just adore those kimonos and robes!) and I also enjoy when politics is involved.
I am shallow. The lovely bishies and Period/Ancient Costumes and Hairstyles drew me in (I flipped through the Japanese magazine that serializes the manga...one of the freebies in the issue was a miniature Saiunkoku artbook). That said, I stayed with the series because of the governance and politics.
Yes! Usually the freebies are a bit lame, but the artbook I got is about twelve pages long and has several full-colour images as well as a sort of "bonus" chapter. If only I could read Japanese I'd be all set! It's from a magazine called Asuka DX (they also serialize the DN Angel and Trinity Blood mangas), but I haven't been able to find a store that sells it since I got my Saiunkoku issue a few years ago :/
ohmyglob yes! I do! I been meaning to read the novel (most likely I will not for I am the worlds laziest reader and schools so time consuming), because the anime leaves the story at such an odd spot (I heard it got canceled) such a shame.
wow! you are able to read the light novels? I read the fan-translated ones - Juuni Kokki fans are lucky to have English fan-translations - I haven't found anything for Saiunkoku beyond a couple of chapters!
But you know, right, that Fuyumi Ono is not writing anymore of her amazing light novels on this wonderous story - so, although the novels did continue further than the 12K anime series, it didn't get to 'the end', so to speak. I am dying to know what happened to Gyoso and Taiki!!!! A fan-translation of the last light novel tells that Taiki is rescued from Hourai, and ends with Risai and Taiki visiting Yoko, then flying off to look for Gyoso ...
